Alleged “impossibilities” are opportunities for our capacity to be stretched

Charles R. Swindoll

You would notice that when you sit in a position for long, standing up or stretching your leg becomes difficult as your muscles have stiffened. According to health.havard.edu sitting for long periods forms tight hamstrings behind the thigh hence why we are advised to stretch regularly instead of waiting for that sudden and painful stretch.

What if you do not stretch yourself while seated and you want to stand? You would then have to go through that painful process that unfortunately could have been avoided. Would you keep seating because you do not want to experience the pain? Absolutely not! You would gather your strength and stretch yourself irrespective.

There are so many things we accept that we cannot do just because that’s the way it has always been and we have been too unbothered to try. One of mine is that I cannot work out to save my life and I have a good reason for that conclusion.

During the Covid-19 lockdown last year, a lot of people were working out online and I decided that why not. So, I downloaded an app and started doing all the planks and squats. On day 1, I was fine and motivated. Day 2, I tried even though I thought my body would break but you see day 3… I just broke down. As in I feel sick and never tried those workouts again. (Only the living can work out and I was not trying to kill myself).

Let us fast forward to last month where I was stuck in traffic. The vehicles were barely moving, some re-routed and others stopped the journey. I was unfortunately in the vehicle where the driver decided he wasn’t going to make the trip again. I only had the option of moving forward as I did not know when the traffic would clear out.

I started walking.

I kept on trekking until my legs were shaking only to realize I had covered over 3 kilometres – after a long day’s work. Needless to say, I thought I would die but I made it!! (The same girl who could not complete 3 days’ workout). Some people said the weakness would kick in the next day but I was completely fine.

If someone had told me that I could achieve this I would not believe it because I would have never tried it unless a situation warranted itself – which it did. If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger mentally or physically.

If it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger mentally or physically

Many people matured early because they lost a parent or a guardian figure early in life. Many started businesses and succeeded in them because of sheer poverty. Many people were forced to stand before crowds because their chair was taken from underneath them.

These are not the best of situations, but results would have never taken place if they did not happen.

Allow yourself to be uncomfortable sometimes. Do not wait until life throws dirt at you before you work the muscles in your legs and stand up. (Note: When you start working your muscles a little, when the big jump is needed you would not feel the pain as much)

Try doing something creative. Try taking on bigger responsibilities and when solutions are needed, exercise your brain to think of some.

Years before David faced Goliath, he was attacked by a bear and a lion. He fought and killed the animals by himself, therefore, building strength and courage. Before he was made king over Israel, he was placed as a shepherd over his father’s flock and built his leadership skill without a crowd.

David was always away caring and catering for these animals to the point that when Prophet Samuel came to anoint a king from his father’s son, he was almost left out. Little did he know that he was stretching and preparing for the marathon of ruling a whole nation.

Your comfort zone is comfortable and stress-free but nothing good grows there. To grow, you need to stretch yourself. Do not be afraid of failure, try something challenging this week!

I easily get lost in good music and a good book. Jesus is my everything and I am a firm believer that there is more to life than what meets the eye. Lets grow shall we?

I could relate to the exercise part you get used to it though when you persevere.

Thank you for reminding us that growth does not happen in comfort zone.

Stretching is not pleasant. But then if you would matchup in life, it’s best ‘self-inflicted’. Thank you for sharing.

Yh. If you don’t self inflict it it’s going to happen anyway. Thank you for your comment

“Nothing great happens in your comfort zone.” This is a must-keep to re-read – and your analogies are smack on point!

Thank you – and well done, Sis.
