A person’s walk with God commences with accepting Jesus Christ as Saviour, believing He died and was resurrected and He is coming again. Remember that this is a walk. It is a process and not a quantum leap. You will have to grow from the point that you are at and one of the ways to do that is by listening to sound teaching.

Many young believers feel that because they have a walk with the Holy Spirit, then they do not need the teaching or admonition of anybody else. Moreover, isn’t it the same God? If God can speak to one pastor about it then He can speak to me too. Sure He can, in fact He does. But there is a place for sound teaching.

Apollos (Acts 18:24-26) was a young, educated and zealous man of God who went about preaching the gospel. One would think he was perfect because he exhibited all the traits of having an encounter with God. Still Aquila and Priscilla had to pick him up to teach him the scripture more perfectly.

Can you see that we cannot be isolated in this God thing. When it comes to the things of the Spirit, laws and protocols are obeyed. There are men and women who have gone before you and have a better understanding of the scripture. It is a Chain reaction. Prayerfully ask God to lead you to people who would teach and disciple you to a better understanding of His word and the things of the Spirit. If you are reading this and you feel like you do not need the help of any teacher then you should seriously check yourself because pride and arrogance are not fruits of the Spirit.

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Acts 17:2 (NIV)

The Berean Christians were eager to hear the teachings from the scripture. It is wisdom to know that other people have been walking with God longer than you have. Other people have gotten revelations from God different from the ones you got. You cannot be a spiritual island. You need to connect with pastors who will teach the true word of God. God has a reason why He raised these men and women.

Be careful to note that the primary objective of the scripture is not necessarily to make you happy. If the teachings you have been hearing have been making you feel comfortable or satisfied with the point you have attained, then I can assure you that you are listening to a watered down gospel.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

The Word of God pierces deep into your soul and spirit. It is the mirror to which you can see your thoughts and motives clearly. When a believer opens up his heart to God in all sincerity, then no matter the level he has attained he would still cry out in brokenness. When you catch glimpses of the glory of God you begin to see how of yourself you can do nothing. You begin to understand grace and the potency of the blood of Jesus. There is always a step higher. A growing believer’s life is characterized with hunger for righteousness.

The Berean Christians are a great example in that they were not satisfied with what the pastor had to say. Paul was a great apostle in bible times. He was used mightily by God to spread the gospel and perform great miracles to the point that handkerchiefs from him healed the sick and drove out evil spirits, yet after listening to a man as great as Paul they would go back to scripture to cross check whatever they learnt.

This is a great lesson because in a time like this with so many ‘great’ men of God, it is very easy to get carried away with one new ‘move of the Spirit’. No pastor’s opinion or believe should be held higher than what the bible says. I don’t care how many dead he has raised to life, whenever he begins to preach against the bible – which initially happens in the most subtle ways, then it is about time to stop listening to them. Dare I call them false prophets. Everybody passes through the filter of the word of God. Every General Overseer, Apostle, Pastor, Evangelist, Prophet. I mean everybody.

Nobody’s opinion or believe should be held higher than what the bible says

Are you being skeptical about who to listen to, just look out for the fruits in their lives. A good friend of mine said if you look at the gifts you maybe overwhelmed by all the things they can do or with their eloquence but fruits do not lie. Are their lives living out the truth of the gospel? Do they make excuses for their sins or do they accept their wrong and acknowledge the saving grace of Jesus? Above all ask God to lead you to the right people.

It is important you listen to SOUND teaching and not just any watered down gospel.
