This past week has been full of tension as people expressed their raw emotions concerning the rape cases in Nigeria and the issue of racism across the world. As a Nigerian, I also was angry, I was also tired as I wondered how harder could it be for a young girl to find safety. The annoying thing about cases like this is it’s not just about the stories that surface but about all the other cases of sexual harassment and rape that have been swept under the carpet because of shame, stigmatization, family ties or just in order not to disrupt the flow of society.

This one case has brought to light other untold stories – to which we may never know if they are true. Cases of rape seldomly get solved because it’s usually one person’s word against the other and the perpetrators are usually in power or are cordial to and respected by the victim. Irrespective of the situation the thought of it saddens the heart.

I’m glad to say that all the ‘noise’ is not in vain as creating awareness helps to remove the awkwardness behind it and normalize the conversation, but beyond that we should figure out what went wrong and what can be done. Some of these predators knew better but I believe some were just a product of a bad upbringing and a failed system. Everyone is going to face the consequences for their actions as we have the responsibility to train ourselves irrespective, but we must agree that something is wrong. It’s not just the devil, it’s a choice to believe deceit. To force oneself sexually on another human being is inhumane and plain barbaric.

As much as we were blinded by the initial anger – justified anger I must add, the root cause of rape, racism and everything messed up right now is sin. Man is depraved. In fact, man has been depraved from bible days. Uju Okorie mentioned how Amnon forced himself on Tamar as he felt a sense of entitlement over her body. Entitlement and power have deceived many into believing they have control over someone’s property and in this case her body. This issue is deeply rooted into our family life and parenting. How do we train the girl and boy child? Is one sex preferred or neglected? Are kids trained to be respectful, do they understand the biblical standard of sex or better still do they have a relationship with God?

When the bible says train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it when he grows up, proves that proper training can help. The family is the smallest unit of the society, so any change has to start from there. Do you have no family? You can join the family of God. Find yourself a good church group, a fellowship or an association that can groom you aright.

The foundation is definitely shaking and I can keep on playing different situations in my head and asking different questions but my conclusion will still amount to the fact that what this world needs is Jesus. Not the type of Jesus that we hide in our purses when we are going to church but the present Jesus that is revealed in our lives every single day.

This world is sick. I watched the video of George Floyd’s murder (and yes I said murder) and how can a human being be stone cold. The police man could probably feel life leaving his body but he still persisted. This world is sick and its help is found in God. Only in God do we realize that we are all equal; black or white, male or female.

Now is the time to not mind your business. A lot of people have been playing safe on issues like this so as not disrupt an already failing system, but I hope you won’t play safe when you see the little boy fondling with the little girl. I hope you won’t play safe when the little girl throws herself on him and when you see youths addicted to pornography. I hope you strongly discard racial and tribalistic differences and I also hope you be a source of encouragement to the young ones who are clearly confused. This is not the time to be fifty-fifty. Pick a side.

P.S: The plea for justice is not misplaced. When a man breaks the law he should be punished by the law. It’s not in a Christian’s place to cover up a crime.

There are so many crazy things resurfacing. The other day it was xenophobia. God help us. Thank you for your comment

Great job! Solutions must always be targeted at the root and not some above-water strategy.

You succinctly captured that which I have always advocated. We will never get it right if we don’t train the boy-child to respect the personality of his female counterpart. For a long time, we only focus on inculcating good manners in the girl-child while neglecting the boy-child. This is the right time to get it right.

More grace Vicky.

Word!! Sin is the problem, and until we deal with it, it could be anyone of us in the position of the offender tomorrow.

Plus I would like to add that, some of these perpetrators, are hurting persons too, probably once victims. “hurt people, hurt people”
