Today’s review is about Jonathan McReynolds debut film titled Favorite Son on BET. It is a 2021 movie about a pastor who had two sons and was obsessed with shaping their lives. He wanted them to become forcefully committed to the ministry but Camden – Jonathan’s character- was not having it. He went against his father, pursued his own path in music outside the church and became the black sheep. Ironically, his pastor father fell far from the standard by being a perpetual cheat and an alcoholic who was more concerned about church administration than actually following God. His father eventually found his way back to God but was unable to settle the rift between him and his son before he passed away.

Generally, the movie was entertaining even though it was telling a Christian story. (It is based on a novel equally titled Favorite Son). As much as I enjoyed it, I had some lessons and reservations.

Firstly, I don’t know if it is just me but the church is usually portrayed as a “set-up” in African American movies. There usually is a negative connotation whereby it is viewed as a business over being a ministry. Preachers are either money launderers, cheats, alcoholics or fanatics who enforce religion. There is the argument that they are representing reality but I do not think that there is a balance that equally shows the good.

To be fair, the movie had some people doing church the right way although they were in the minority.

Then, it gave a glimpse into the business of gospel music. The ministry of gospel music is quite different from the business which involves streams, sales, touring, and much more. I watched the struggles of a music minister trying to push his music to the world.

Then came my favourite part, the romance. Camen and his girlfriend Dawn were in love although Dawn was a curious good girl who wanted to explore the path of lust and Camen was not having it. (You should have seen the way she was touching and kissing our very own Jonathan. I felt like it was too much for just a movie jare)

They loved each other but Camen’s priority was clearly his music. A time came when he had to leave town to record and he had no plan for their relationship. In my head, I was just screaming like put the girl in the picture na. I notice that some men do this. They say they love the girl but their actions scream otherwise. It is like they find it difficult to communicate that they need to achieve some things first before fully committing.

It is either this, or we ladies do not understand and we want our men to give us full attention irrespective. We want this and still expect him to be on par financially and in other areas. I think both sexes should make their expectations known and just make it work.

The major thing I love about the movie Favorite Son, is that laced in between the story and drama lies a deep message of love and forgiveness.  It portrayed the necessity of a strong family unit and showed that there is no cut too deep that genuine forgiveness cannot heal. It also showed that actions have consequences and regaining trust is a difficult but possible process.

Please do well to watch it, do not forget to leave a comment and subscribe for weekly content. Thank you for reading. Remember, God loves you like crazy.
