The domino effect

It is like a row of standing dominoes that do not seem connected until a little force is exerted on one which in turn affects all the others. They did not seem connected initially but then they really are.

As human beings we are all connected in one way or the other. Whether it is with family or people of the same race or country, we always seem to find ourselves in groups whereby we feel more comfortable than in others. Credit could be given to the fact that we speak the same language or share the same DNA. This makes it easier to affect that particular group because we all share something in common.

Have you ever admired someone from a distance? I mean someone you have never spoken to and who does not know you but for some reason you are encouraged whenever you see that person doing what they do. This could be on social media. Somebody who you do not even know but any time you come online and read what they have to say or see a picture you just feel like you can make it through life. Or am I alone in this?

You cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards

Steve Jobs

Try as hard as we may to be independent, we still are directly or indirectly affected by people. We can choose to ignore it or shove it away but we cannot argue that it is there. The connection that kind of links us together is what I would like to call a chain reaction.

It is a situation whereby your alignment sparks something in the life of somebody else which encourages them to also get into a deeper relationship with God. Where your commitment to making right decisions makes another person believe that they too can make something good out of life.

You will not be able to see how all these connect. You may never realize that what you are doing is part of the chain that completes the whole equation. Your nothings and your seeming insignificant nonsense with God’s hand on it is adding color to the bigger picture. You may think that you do not matter but I am here to tell you that you do.

Since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect

Hebrews 11:40 (NIV)

But please be reminded that the domino effect could be positive or negative. Your bad decisions have the capacity to produce a negative outcome in someone else’s life. See into the life of David for instance. I am sure that as he saw Bathsheba on the roof and chose to have her by all means, he did not fathom that Amnon – his son, would end up raping his sister Tamar or that Absalom would sleep with his concubines on a roof too. (2 Samuel 13:11-14, 2 Samuel 16:22)

Let me introduce you to generational choices. It is a proof that the choices we make in life outlives us. Your decision to drop some habits and pick up new ones can change the course of your life, your family line and the people connected to you. So before you think about doing something foolish this year be reminded that it is not just about you.

You matter. You complete the bigger picture.
