It’s like there is an unwritten list of taboo topics to which pornography is chief. Just like anything that is not brought to light, it goes ahead to silently destroy young men and women – Christians included. The word pornography is actually derived from a Greek word porni which means prostitute and it is defined as the representation of sexual behaviour in books, pictures, motion pictures and any form of media intended to cause sexual excitement.

It is easy for an individual to get trapped in this as everyone has access to the internet. These sites pop up from time to time and they literally rub it in our faces. Many times the entanglement starts with a mistake and some grows to become an addiction. Just like any form of addiction it leaves you in a worse state than it finds you.

People who are addicted to pornography can spend up to 12 hours on those sites and the average age of exposure is 11 years old (shocking!!!) Many have sold the idea of porn as just something to feel good and pass time while there are so many things they do not highlight:

  • It is not real sex: As much as there are people crazy enough to post videos of themselves, usually the videos online are staged. As this is a booming market and demand is higher than supply, producers outsource actors to create content. It is not real sex.
  • It appeals to your lust: What it does is appeal to your lust and the effect does not just go away. A time will come whereby one would want to put into practice all the things he is learning – whether forcefully or not. The brain is a very powerful organ and whatever you feed to it, it stores. Even the bible says guard your heart. Sexual urges are normal but pornography doesn’t help your situation.
  • It is related to sex trafficking: Remember how I said the demand is higher than supply? So, in order to satisfy this supply, directors and producers sometimes go out of their way and get boys and girls (children mostly), train them and force a number into pornography. This is plain slavery. Millions of people across the world have been sex trafficked.

During the lockdown, I started following Victor Olukoju and he had a live session with an alleged ex porn actress, Jan Villarubia. Prior to this time, I never gave it a thought that people were forced to do these things. She spoke about her drug and alcohol abuse as a means to become numb enough to do the things she had to do. And when she said she was forced to have sex with 20 men on set, she passed out and they still didn’t stop? I could have died.

The more you subscribe to things like this, the more you indirectly support cases like hers and many more that we are unaware of. All to satisfy what? Your lust?

The big question is how to end a pornographic addiction. The first step is to calling it out the way it is. You are not just surfing the internet, it’s not research or entertainment, it’s not because you have too much time on your hands. You need to accept you are hooked on this thing.

Do not feel justified because you only watch porn a couple of times, because as they say, little drops make a mighty ocean. It is always better to nip things in the bud before they get too far.

I am one of those people who believes that the blood of Jesus is potent enough to deliver from the little things like lying and the bigger things like addiction. So, I am asking you to give Jesus a chance to fix this.

After giving him a chance, it would be nice if you are not in the background making things worse. You have to make up your mind that you need help and you are done with it. Things as little as taking a stroll or switching off your phone can make a difference in this fight.

Accountability is everything. Tell someone about your struggles. Accountability brings the situation to the light and it comes with an ounce of shame. This shame is healthy, as it may go a long way to stopping you from repeating this cycle. Please ensure you are accountable to someone who can pray with you and for you. Hence, the person has to be in right standing with God.

Another thing is change the atmosphere. It is almost like the urge to watch these videos comes with its atmosphere, so, change it. Play worship songs in the background, listen to a message, study the bible or talk to someone who you know will have plenty gist .

Pronounce the word of God over your life. The devil being our chief accuser, will be quick to use situations like this to make us feel less that what we are. So, learn to pronounce the promises over your life even when you fall. Remember that you are human and you are doing what humans do. Living above things like this is supernatural (especially with all this raging hormones), so depend on God and remind yourself that God loves you irrespective. In fact, know that God loves you crazy.

Identity

Also, do you know you can set your phone in such a way whereby you do not get explicit content? All you have to do is go to google on your browser, below the page you will see an icon for settings. Click that and further click on search settings. In this page, go to safe search filters and click on ‘filter explicit results’. Then save. This will curb your search results so that no longer will you get pop-ups of porn sites or porn videos. You can check the settings on your computer and play around it too.

P.S: The devil is not after your pleasure but after your soul. Do not let him win.
